City Of Walls

Introduction

What happens to a city when you separate people by social and physical barriers? This is the main focal point of the project; City Of Walls. The project wants to address the social, economical and urban segregation emerging all over the world, physically manifested in Gated Communities. The project is inspired by the extensive work by Teresa Caldeira and is made clear by calling the project by her book title; City Of Walls.

Issue
As old as human urban settlement, the enclosed enclave has been existing. Once it was citadels to protect from surrounding enemies, or competing tribes. Later when civilization developed, walls became a way to maintain national boarders and ideology in, and foreign influx out. Even today massive walls separate people, religion and economy.
But the walls addressed by this project is far more subtle. It is walls created by exclusive enclaves within the urban fabric, often called Gated Communities.

But what happens with a city when it becomes segregated within? How does the city develop when the social and economical separation becomes so great, that it’s physical manifested in the urban landscape?
